Kalpana Patel (22), a resident of Bhayandar,
registered a police complaint on Thursday against
her husband and his family for cheating and
harassment. Little did she know when she got married
that her husband had already married three women
before her and had harassed one of them for dowry.
Kalpana's life was shattered three months after her
marriage. Her husband, Arvind, a share dealer, had
extracted Rs 2 lakh each from Kalpana and his second
wife Rina. Both the women have now lodged a police
complaint against him.
"We
have registered the complaint, but presently on record
we can say that Arvind was married only twice. We still
have to record statements of other women whom Arvind
allegedly married, as they are unaware of the incident,"
said Ashok Vastrad, senior police inspector at Bhayander
police station.
Kalpana,
a reporter with a leading Gujarati daily before
marriage, got married to Arvind in April 2006.
"It was
an arranged marriage and Ashwin came across as a very
handsome and well-settled person. But soon after the
marriage, I came to know that he was in a relationship
with Sukanya Bajaj (44), our neighbour, who was also
earlier married to him," Kalpana told Newsline.
Bajaj,
say police, lives in Bajrang gali with her two daughters
and it is yet to be established that she was married to
Arvind.
According to Kalpana, she came to know about Rina after
she left for her home town, Surat. "When my neighbours
informed me that Arvind was earlier married to Bajaj, I
thought that they just had a temporary affair. Later, I
came to know about Rina also who lived in Mehsana in
Gujarat and then I managed to track her down," added
Kalpana.
The
police have booked Arvind under Section 494, 498 and 495
of the Indian Penal Code for remarriage, cheating by
concealment of former marriages and subjecting women to
cruelty.
