Every now and then you hear about a young couple who’s love for one another has been thwarted by outside forces. Unfortunately, many of these cases all too frequently end in suicide. In this case it appears that religious differences and family opposition seen to have been the stimulant that resulted in two teenage lovers taking poison to end their lives.

Rajesh Rathore and Allah Rakkhi from Lucknow, India, were meeting frequently and this was an open secret in the entire village. The two families had even confronted each other over the issue, but the two young lovers refused to heed the advice of their respective families.

Rajesh’s apparently stated that he would elope and marry Allah if her parents did not give in and agree to their marriage.

The municipal officials in Kota Bharu, capital of Kelantan state, which is run by the Pan-Malaysian Islamic party seem to think that they have wild rapists in their midsts.

Pamphlets have been distributed to this northern Malaysian city recommending that Muslim women shun heavy makeup and loud shoes. This city is ruled by conservative Islamists and the local women are being urged by the city’s authorities to forsake bright lipstick and noisy high-heels “to preserve their dignity and avoid rape”.

The party’s brand of Islam - mocked by Malaysian liberals as “Taliban lite” - has already decreed the following:

• that supermarkets must have separate checkout lines for men and women.
• Couples caught sitting too close together on park benches are hunted down by the city’s moral enforcers and fined in the city’s sharia courts.
• a directive on dress a decade ago decreed that Muslim women must wear non-transparent headscarves that cover the chest, along with loose-fitting, long-sleeved blouses. There are fines and as many as 20 women are punished for breaking the rule every month.
• previously, on the mullah’s or spiritual leaders blamed women for snatching men’s sleep. He pointed out the abuses men suffer in silence at the hands of wicked women. The night attire and body-hugging dresses of women seduce hapless men. Thus they cannot sleep.

I think the reason these men are losing sleep is they have guilty conscience.

I ran across a great little piece at The Blog Fathers. The post poses a sensitive question for most couples - will jealousy rear its ugly head by your having a friend of the opposite sex?

Many couples must endure long distance relationships. Some have met on the internet and maintain their friendship through emails and an occasional visit. Many are apart due to time constraints, in particular work related separations.

Often these separations are not only physical separations, but emotional ones as well. A new job will often place a partner in another “zone” for a period of time as the new responsibilities become an all consuming focus.

It seems unreasonable to expect yoursoulmate to become a social hermit because you are separated by distance. If your marriage isn’t strong enough to overcome an occasional drink with someone of the opposite sex, or a conversation for that matter, you may need to re-evaluate your priorities.

With 38 years of sometimes not so wedded bliss behind me, one of the cornerstones of my marriage as been it’s openness and honesty. Can you say the same?

It seems the Australians need to take a few things off the “barbie”. The Aussie Barbie is Australia’s slang for the Australian Barbeque - Australia’s most famous culinary experience. Almost every household in Australia owns a BBQ, all part of the Australian household décor.

Australia has a dubious honor outlined in a recent study - they are the new heavyweight champions of the world, according to new figures showing the nation has a greater proportion of obese citizens than the United States.

The latest comprehensive obesity study has shown that 26% of adult Australians - almost four million - are now obese, one million more than the last calculation in 1999.

The findings give Australia top spot as the world’s most overweight nation, ahead of the notoriously super-sized Americans, who have a 25% obesity rate.

The report reveals that nine million adults have a BMI over 25, making them overweight or obese, an increase from seven million.

Middle-aged Australians are leading the way, with seven in 10 men and six in 10 women aged 45 to 64 now registering a BMI of 25 or more.

An analysis of the data shows that there will be an extra 700,000 heart-related hospital admissions in the next 20 years due to obesity alone.

Almost 125,000 people will die as a result, many prematurely.

The report calls for a national weight loss strategy on the scale of smoking and skin cancer campaigns, including subsidising gym memberships and personal training sessions for heavier people.

The last stand on public kissing in India, seems to have been shoved under one of those fabulous Indian carpets. In March, the Indian Supreme Court, squashed an arrest warrant issued against Hollywood actor Richard Gere for kissing Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty

Gere, tightly clasped Shetty - winner of Britain’s Celebrity Big Brother reality show - and planted kisses on her cheek in front of gaping Indian truck drivers at an awareness event in Rajasthan.

Considering Bollywood is known for it’s sexually suggestive sone and dance routines, this particular incident caused an uproar throught India. Kissing in public is technically illegal in India

A further example of India’s backward views:

• a couple from Israel were fined 500 Indian rupees ($11) for embracing and kissing in a traditional Hindu ceremony. The couple had decided to get married while visiting India
• More than 100 couples were rounded up by police in Bombay and they were taken away in vans, fined up to 1,200 rupees for indulging in “obscene” behaviour and forced to endure the humiliation of calling their parents from behind bars. This from the commercial capital of the country and the home of Bollywood.
• Supporters of the Shiv Sena (Army of Shiva), a nationalist party accused of orchestrating violence against Muslims in the 1993 riots, attacked people celebrating Valentine’s Day

• there is a ban on sex education books in state schools.

It appears that a Singapore man has a peculiar fetish. He molests women by smelling their armpits.

He was recently sentenced to 14 years in jail and 18 strokes of the cane for his crimes against armpits. This type of sentence is usually reserved for hardcore criminals but the courts felt he was likely to commit these crimes again as he has previous convictions for drug and sex related offences.

First they passed a law against wearing of Muslim head scarves or hijabs in public schools. Now a Frenchcourt has annulled the marriage of a Muslim couple, because the Muslim bride lied to her husband-to-be claiming she was a virgin.

French Prime Minister François Fillion said an appeal would be lodged so that virginity didn’t become a legal precondition for marriage in France.

French newspapers reported Wednesday that the young woman at the centre of the row was opposing the appeal because the case was already generating humiliating publicity.

The bridegroom’s lawyer said the issue wasn’t the woman’s sexual experience, nor the fact that some in the Muslim community had conservative views of marriage. It was that she had lied to her fiancé, he said.

“In the ruling, there is no word ‘Muslim’, there is no word ‘religion’, there is no word ‘custom.’ And if one speaks of virginity, it is with the term ‘a lie,’” the lawyer told the Associated Press.

A Italian psychology magazine interviewed more than 1,000 Italians between the ages of 20 to 60. They discovered that they would pass on getting something to eat in favor of cheating on their partners.

It seems that lunch (between 12:30 and 2:00) accounted for one in three acts of adultery. Regardless of the location, whether in the car, the office or restaurant restroom, it has to be over and done with quickly while everyone else is out to lunch.
