India Emerging As HIV AIDs Leader

May 5th, 2008 by GiGi

I normally try to blog about lighter things, but an Indian friend of mine brought the following to my attention:

India is one of the largest and most populated countries in the world, with over one billion inhabitants. Of this number, it’s estimated that around 2.5 million Indians are currently living with [/tag]HIV[/tag].

HIV emerged later in India than it did in many other countries. Infection rates soared throughout the 1990s, and today the epidemic affects all sectors of Indian society, not just the groups – such as sex workers and truck drivers – with which it was originally associated.

In a country where poverty, illiteracy and poor health are rife, the spread of HIV presents a daunting challenge.

India has the second highest incidents of HIV/AIDS (2nd only to South Africa and Nigeria). Four and a half million people in India have AIDS. Seventy percent of sex workers don’t use condoms because their customers don’t want to and will pay more not to use condoms.

One fifth of AIDS cases in India are married women who’s loving husbands brought it home to them.
